Picking Up the Pieces

oil/board
The magpie is one of the only year round birds that frequent my yard during the cold Idaho winters. Although they are rather aggressive birds, I admire their intelligence, courage and survival skills. “Picking Up the Pieces” reflects their tenacity.

Hello Lori,
I very much appreciate your work – I work in oil as well and my passion is still life work. I am currently working on a sunflower piece and enjoyed your u-tube demo on sunflowers. I am curious, I see quiet a lot of birds in your work. What do you use for models here – I know these lovely feathered sweeties won’t sit still for you – any tricks you would like to share?
Also, do you ever have any workshops? Would be interested – thanks

hi lori
Beginner artist i am, i love the colours in the back ground and how they reflect off the front of the cabinet, blue and red, the colours are so amazing,my amagination is running wild, the amazing cabinet has me thinking, living on a farm waking to a cold winter morning and watching the magpies stopping by.
Thank you Hiria,
Yes the neutral backgrounds really help set the stage for the rest of the painting. Thank you for the visit! Happy painting.

Hello Asha,
Thank you so much! Happy to meet you here.

Hello Jody,
I use to paint from actual frozen specimens, but that was kind of gross- lol. So, I work from photographs. If I am not sure about the lighting, I create a rough model out of scultpy clay. This help me understand the shadows and creates a believable atmosphere.
Thank you!
Lori
