Vanishing Idaho
24×36
oil on canvas
This painting was inspired by a scene I saw in western Idaho while on my way to Yellowstone. I painted the majority of the painting with wide putty knives. You can check out the interesting process and progression of the painting here…Painting With a Putty Knife.

hi Lori! I have enjoyed your blog and website for some time now, just starting to consider doing some online things, like a blog (eek, scary!) and am thinking of ways to use my facebook to promote my work. still rather unsure of that, I don’t want to bombard my friends with ‘buy my work now!” but, well, would really like it if they did!
I just love your videos! I have a question–you are using a screen to paint landscapes from, yes? and in one video you show ‘dueling’ paintings–two at a time (or more) to keep progression and if you get stuck you can still keep working. how, or do you do this same thing with landscapes?? I see it done with your still life work and just wondering if landscapes work with this as well? really liked that video in particular, as well as the plein air ones.
I don’t often do this, write to someone I do not know, but you seem like we’d have a nice time over coffee, so I am trying it! and if you ever get to south dakota, I invite you to paint here.

Hi Chris, thanks for the great feedback. It would be fun to meet for a cup of coffee and talk about art – lol!
Yes, I have a large computer monitor next to my easel. It really helps me see the details of my reference photos.
I do ‘dual’ landscape paintings at the same time too! Especially when I am crunch-time for a show. I am glad that little video inspired you. Thanks again for the nice comment.

I have been looking at your painting and think your landscapes are beautiful i have never tried oil painting i think bob ross turned me off them but i love the way you paint oil
Hi Lori,
I just wanted to thank you and to let you know how wonderful your work is.
When searching the web I constantly run into artist who would rather make the “buck” before trying to help others. Because you care enough to give helpful hints and to share some of your secrets I have been inspired to pick up a brush again. I know I have the talent, but because I am self teaching I always ran into walls when trying to figure out basic painting techniques and basic “how to”.
I now have my studio set up, thank you.
One day I would love to own one of your pieces, your work is incredibly.
Take Care
Abby
Hello sweet Abby. Please accept my belated reply. I am way behind on comments, and can barely keep up with everything I do. It is such a treat to hear that I have helped inspire you in some small way. Thank you so much for sharing your story and I hope you continue to grow as an artist. Please keep in touch and let me know if you have questions.
Happy painting,
Lori
Hello, I am so glad you like my landscapes. I hope you can learn something from visiting this site.
Best,
Lori
