These colorful bottles inspired me. I am challenged by the different light, highlights and refractions that I must interpret in paint. Hummingbirds are my favorite birds. When I was a young girl, I would help nurse injured birds back to health, and then I returned them to the wild. Sometimes, I needed the help of the ‘bird lady’. She had a ‘pet’ hummingbird. The little fellow was unable to use one of his wings, so during the day she kept him in a bouquet of flowers in her living-room. This event inspired my still life paintings with birds.

  1. Lori,
What do you use to get that much texture on your panel?
    Thanks in advance.

    Good afternoon Lori,
I came to the library because the weather report issued a tornado watch, and I figured I’d be better off in the public library than in my home which is surrounded by 90 foot oak trees.
So I got on the internet at the library and decided to look up how to clean an oil painting because I have several old paintings that need to be cleaned. My grandfather was a fine artist and one of his paintings really needs some TLC.
Ultimately I found your site, and I was immediately drawn to your painting of the Hummingbird and Bottles. Lovely the way the light seems to emit from inside the bottles. And hummingbirds are magical little creatures. You have captured their other-worldliness and their quick beating little hearts and wings.
Thank you Lori for sharing your gentle, subtle appreciation of this world and your artistic expression of all that is dear.
    Sincerely,
    Guy Frank

At first sight i thought it was a butterfly cocoon. When i looked closer i saw it was a bird thanks to the beak. It made me think about feathers and the power of a writer/mind.

The idea made me think about the metamorphose a butterfly goes through and which also glass is allowed to go through when there is a blast of warmth and breath been put through.

Again very inspiring and very vivid to the imagination.

What a beautiful comment. Thank you for your patience with my belated reply. I am behind on comments! I hope you found a way to clean your grandfather’s painting, and hopefully you were safe from the tornados too!
I hope to see you here again someday. Thank YOU.
    Lori :)

Hello Randall. I have been experimenting with different textures. This painting has joint compound under the oils. I gessoed it first. :)

I love the way you see things! Are you a writer? You have a way with words…thank you for making my mind wander with your words!
