Aspen Dance was a fun painting to create. My brush literally danced across the canvas! The painting was inspired by some great photos I had taken of these aspens during the early autumn last year. I am happy with the dazzling color and light in this painting.

I live in a winter wonderland and love it, but I must confess to having moments where I find myself longing for and reminiscing about the warmer days of summer. This painting, “Western Summer”, depicts just that. I chose to paint the quintessential sunflower, who’s cheery blossoms reminds of us warmer days. The magpie is one of the only year round birds that frequent my yard during the cold Idaho winters. Although they are rather aggressive birds, I admire their intelligence, courage and survival skills. “Picking Up the Pieces” reflects their tenacity.

The colorful plummage of this parrot inspired me. To me they are colorful like a rainbow. The pose also reminded me of the bend of a rainbow, hence the name! I just returned from Australia where I saw these parrots in the wild!

Bohemian Rhapsody

Every autumn the Bohemian Waxwings migrate through our mountain valley. They move in large flocks and frequent the fruit trees. At times they even become drunken by the fermented berries that still hang from the trees. I enjoy watching these flighty, exotic looking birds as they flock to my cherry trees each year.

I was inspired by the iridescent blues of the Blue Jay and same beautiful colors repeated in the Chinese vase. Blues have a calming effect on people and are easy to look at and live with.

Butterflies are mystical and symbolic creatures. I love the way they float softly on the breeze and are able to stay ’just out of reach’. These butterflies are freely lifting from the confines of the box and into the blue.

Orchid’s Glow is a graceful but minimalistic painting. The rich brownish purples of the antique Satsuma vase harmonize with the warm yellows of the background and little Golden Crowned Kinglet.
